Battlefield 3 Declares War

Developer DICE and publisher EA are making their mark on the first-person shooter genre with Battlefield 3. Their first step in this goal was today’s release of the first gameplay trailer for the game. The trailer, as seen above, might be confused for a cinematic but DICE and EA said that the action seen in the trailer is gameplay footage. If you blinked and missed something, check out the screenshots from the trailer.

As previously revealed, Battlefield 3 will use Frostbite 2, a Direct-X 11 engine that pushes lighting and shadows to new heights. Karl Magnus Troedsson, General Manager of DICE said, “We are gearing up for a fight and we’re here to win. Where other shooters are treading water Battlefield 3 innovates. Frostbite 2 is a game-changer for shooter fans. We call it a next-generation engine for current-generation platforms.” Patrick Bach, Executive Produce for Battlefield 3, talked about returning to the series’ roots, “We wanted to create the most immersive and emotionally powerful Battlefield game ever and we needed new technology to deliver on our vision. Battlefield 3 preserves the franchise’s signature sandbox style and even brings back classic fan favorites like jets, going prone and 64-player multiplayer on PC.”

While Battlefield 3 isn’t coming out until later this year, EA revealed the Battlefield 3 Limited Edition for pre-order. The limited edition includes the Back to Karkand DLC pack, which includes four maps from Battlefield 2 re-created with the Frostbite 2 engine, along with Battlefield 2 weapons, vehicles, and rewards. Battlefield 3 will be available this fall for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.
