Today Game Informer published exclusive first look for the upcoming Jurassic Park game. The first thing to notice is the screenshots. Normally Telltale games are made with a cartoonish flare, a stylized look that makes the puzzles and gameplay fit into the atmosphere of the game. Jurassic Park, however, seems to move away from the stylized look and goes for more of a realistic approach.

No Jurassic Park game has ever touched on this aspect. The last video game to feature the dinosaurs from Jurassic Park was 2003’s Operation Genesis. “Universal didn’t want another dinosaur shooting game, said Joel Dreskin, Director of Marketing for Telltale Games, “That’s something from their side that interested them in Telltale Games as a partner for the property.”
Executive director Kevin Boyle knows that lies ahead for him and his team. “As far as pacing goes, there are some things that are useful from the heritage of Telltale, but creating a new experience that pays off on both the slower-paced character building moments and high tension you expect from Jurassic Park is a new direction for Telltale. Story and character are a really important part of it. You are going to feel drama. You are going to feel tension. You’ll feel different kinds of emotions. There’s humor. Light moments. Downtime to get to like the characters. Certainly the wonder and awe of the island, and then everything breaks down to those moments of terror.”

Some of the game will take place at the same time as the first film, but Boyle explains that you’ll be experiencing these moments through the eyes of different and new characters. “We’ll see our characters kind of cobbling together and asking ‘What the hell went down here?’” Boyle said. “We’re going to pursue this MacGuffin to a new conclusion.”

Telltale may be the king of adventure game, but they keep looking to Quantic Dreams’ Heavy Rain for inspiration both in terms of story and gameplay. “While our story is more linear than Heavy Rain, actions the player takes are reflected in the way the story is told,” Boyle said. “The choices the players make result in changes to the details of the story. Players will know we are paying attention to the decisions they make.” He goes onto say that Telltale is approaching the task with “more focus on cinematic presentation of your interactions,” meaning that gameplay will generally be slower-paced and ramp up as the dinosaurs start looking for a snack.

Jurassic Park will be released sometime in 2011 for the PC, Mac, and consoles.
